Vakbond ABVV | Wereld Sociaal Forum 2013 | Tunis

Public Services International is actively involved with the World Social Forum 26-30 March 2013 in Tunis, Tunisia. We are hosting and co-sponsoring numerous events on trade union rights, youth and empowerment of women, where PSI affiliate members will share their views on water, women, tax justice, climate change and other important issues. This forum is of particular significance given the political challenges facing our members in the Middle East and North Africa two years after the Arab Spring. Thousands of participants from civil society organisations, trade unions and progressive political groups will be attending this gathering.

Let the spring flowers blossom: The rise of Arab trade union women leaders

March 26, 2013
PSI women's leadership seminar in Tunis prior to the World Social Forum
They continue to live with the realities of ongoing wars and revolutions, discrimination and abuse, but Arab women are finding ways to organise for a better future through sisterhood and trade union solidarity across borders.
Through an initiative sponsored by the Swedish trade union development organisation LO/TCO, 33 women participated in Public Services International’s Middle East and North Africa regional women’s leadership conference in Tunis, 23-24 March 2013.
Union activists from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait, Palestine, Canada, Belgium and Sweden shared experiences and brainstormed on ways to advance women’s equality in their workplaces and respective countries.

John Dugard in NRC: Nederzettingenbeleid is pure apartheid

Israeli tanks breach the truce in Gaza 24Feb13 February 24, 2013

MEMO-Middle East Monitor     -     23 February 2013
israeli-bulldozerIsraeli occupation forces carried out on Thursday morning a limited invasion into the Khoza’a neighbourhood to the east of Khan Younis city.
According to eyewitnesses, several Israeli tanks accompanied by seven bulldozers penetrated about 300 metres deep into the Palestinian farms adjacent to the border in the area.
The bulldozers uprooted a number of trees and caused extensive damage to the Palestinian farms, particularly the wheat and barley crops. Sporadic shots were heard in the area, but no casualties were reported.
Local sources said that this invasion is the third in 24 hours. According to the sources, a similar number of Israeli tanks and bulldozers entered the same area yesterday morning with tanks and bulldozers. That coincided with an incursion into the eastern area of Jabalia city, north of the Gaza Strip. There, the Israelis also levelled Palestinian farms and uprooted a large number of trees.
