Public Services International is actively involved with the World Social Forum 26-30 March 2013 in Tunis, Tunisia. We are hosting and co-sponsoring numerous events on trade union rights, youth and empowerment of women, where PSI affiliate members will share their views on water, women, tax justice, climate change and other important issues. This forum is of particular significance given the political challenges facing our members in the Middle East and North Africa two years after the Arab Spring. Thousands of participants from civil society organisations, trade unions and progressive political groups will be attending this gathering.

Arabische vakbondsvrouwen in opmars

Let the spring flowers blossom: The rise of Arab trade union women leaders

They continue to live with the realities of ongoing wars and revolutions, discrimination and abuse, but Arab women are finding ways to organise for a better future through sisterhood and trade union solidarity across borders.

Through an initiative sponsored by the Swedish trade union development organisation LO/TCO, 33 women participated in Public Services International’s Middle East and North Africa regional women’s leadership conference in Tunis, 23-24 March 2013.

Union activists from Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait, Palestine, Canada, Belgium and Sweden shared experiences and brainstormed on ways to advance women’s equality in their workplaces and respective countries.

Russell Tribunaal over Palestina afgerond, en nu verder

Zondag 17 maart werd in Brussel het 'Russell Tribunal on Palestine' afgerond in het zeer grote Auditorium Passage 44. Ook ABVAKABO's Palestinawerkgroep was aanwezig tussen minstens 600 anderen.
Gesproken werd met Shaher Sa’ed, de algemeen secretaris van de PGFTU, die was uitgenodigd door de Algemene Centrale-ABVV. Ook spraken we Koen Vanbrabandt van die AC-ABVV, die bij ons sprak op 12 november (zie Palestinaconferentie); met een groep mede-AC-ABVVers was hij betrokken bij de organisatie van het Brussels Russell Tribunaal. De eerdere sessies van het tribunaal (Barcelona, Londen, Kaapstad, New York) werden ook gesteund door vakbonden, o.a. door Unison en Cosatu. Elders op deze weblog meer over de eerdere Londense sessie van het tribunaal, over met de Israelische bezettingspolitiek medeplichtige bedrijven (corporate complicity), zie RToP on corporations plus de RToP-conclusies Londen 2010. Zoals bekend vanuit het PSI-congres (nov 2012) worden die bedrijven door PSI-bonden 'aangepakt'.
