Palestinian BDS National Committee to participate in South Africa session
of Russell Tribunal on Palestine - Cape Town, 5-7 November 2011

* Representatives of the Palestinian BDS National Committtee (BNC), the broad
Palestinian civil society coalition that leads the BDS movement, will
participate in the Third International Session of the Russell Tribunal on
Palestine in South Africa next month. Rafeef Ziadah, Jamal Juma’ and Ingrid
Jaradat will appear as expert witnesses testifying about Israel’s apartheid
policies against the Palestinian people.
The Russell Tribunal on Palestine is a public awareness tribunal set up by
international civil society to investigate violations of international law
perpetrated against the Palestinian people.
The upcoming session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine will investigate
the question: “Are Israel’s practices against the Palestinian People in
breach of the prohibition on Apartheid under International Law?”
Jamal Juma’, coordinator of BNC member organisation Stop the Wall, will
discuss measures designed to segregate Palestinians.
“Whereas international institutions and governments fail to take action in
support of justice and equality for the Palestinian people, the Russell
Tribunal will raise awareness about the urgency of holding Israel
accountable for its violations of international law,” said Juma’.
“This tribunal will serve as an effective tool with which to educate a
wider public about the nature of Israel’s system of oppression of
Palestinians and will help to mobilise support for popular resistance and
the BDS movement,” he added.
Rafeef Ziadah, representing the Palestinian Trade Union Coalition for BDS
(PTUC-BDS), the largest Palestinian trade union coalition and a member
organisation of the BNC, will give evidence on the exploitation of
Palestinian labour.
Ingrid Jaradat will discuss Palestinian identity and Palestinians as a
distinct racial group for the purposes of the definition of apartheid.
Others due to attend include Stéphane Hessel, Alice Walker and Ronald
Kasrils, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Over door kolonisten vernielde olijfbomen
Volgens de hulporganisatie Oxfam hebben Israelische kolonisten dit jaar door olijfbomen te vernielen voor een schadepost van $500,000 gezorgd voor boeren op de Westoever. Oxfam, samen met Palestijnse organisaties als de Unie van Werkcomités in de Landbouw en de Palestijnse Hulpcomités voor Landbouwers, schatten dat de olijven die dit jaar worden geoogst ongeveer de helft zullen produceren van van de oogst van 2010. ......

ABVAKABO-leden plukken olijven in Palestina
Jose en Heleen zijn op bezoek in Palestina en doen verslag. Vandaag schreef Heleen over een dagje olijven plukken; eerder schreef Jose daar al over. Lees ook de verslagen van hun andere dagen in door Israel bezet Palestijns gebied.
Uit de twee blogs blijkt - nogmaals - wat er mankeert aan Decent Work, het internationale vakbonds-speerpunt qua actie, en aan een Decent Life voor Palestijnen. Binnen de FNV spreken we van de Campagne voor Gewoon Goed Werk.

Amsterdam 7-10-2011: IVV-secretaris Sharan Burrow gaat voor Palestina!
Vrijdagmiddag 7 oktober sprak Sharan Burrow (ITUC - IVV) het openingswoord te Amsterdam tijdens een door de FNV georganiseerde internationale conferentie vanwege Decent Work Day, de wereldwijde vakbondsdag voor Gewoon Goed Werk voor iedereen. Of voor Waardig Werk, zoals men in België zegt vanuit een coalitie van vakbeweging met andere maatschappelijke organisaties. Deze jaarlijkse actiedag komt voort uit een ILO-initiatief (*).
Gevraagd om meer te vertellen over haar deelname aan de 1 meidemonstratie in Palestina (te Ramallah) dit jaar zei Sharan Burrow: 'Palestine is in my heart'! En van harte de democratiseringsbewegingen in de Arabische wereld te ondersteunen. Ze prees met name de rol van nieuwe vakbondsbewegingen in Egypte en Tunesië.
Ze pleitte ook voor een Financial Transactions Tax, signaleerde de trend om werknemers zekerheden af te pakken (onzeker maken) en we leerden (?) dat Ikea haar basis in Nederland heeft, omdat het zo geen belasting hoeft te betalen.
In de 1e workshop over 'de invloed van buitenlands kapitaal' doemde meteen het MVO-punt op: van Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen moeten we vanuit de vakbeweging veel beter werk maken. Daarbij moeten onze kaderleden in ondernemingsraden zorgen voor OR-aanwezigheid in aandeelshoudersvergaderingen. Dat kan, maar gebeurt nog niet. Meer informatie moet openbaar. Beleggen in clusterbommen was bijvoorbeeld heel snel afgelopen na één Zembla-uitzending! Treurig en tekenend was dat de HR-directeur (personeelsdirecteur heette dat vroeger) van V&D niet mocht deelnemen van de buitenlandse eigenaar van V&D (Sun Capital).
Gespreksleider Cees Grimbergen signaleerde nog een vakbondsdilemma waar een pensioenfonds ABP belegt via Alpinvest voor goede rendementen; dat Alpinvest belegt ook in bedrijven met mindere arbeidsomstandigheden (Hema werd genoemd).
Helaas lukte kort interviewen van Sharan Burrow niet, daar ze eerder terug moest naar Brussel. Komt nog.

De Israëli's stelen, branden en vernielen waterbronnen (Frank Roels 29-9-2011)
Op de Westelijke Jordaanoever en in Oost-Jeruzalem breken Israëli's Palestijnse woningen af, branden ze boomgaarden en velden plat en vernielen ze waterbronnen en reservoirs. Dit staat in het recente rapport (27/9) van drie VN-rapporteurs, onder wie onze landgenoot (*) Olivier De Schutter. De Palestijnen moeten zelf betalen voor het afbreken van hun huis, en een boete wegens 'illegaal bouwen'. ......

PGFTU (Ms Ghada Abu Ghalyoun ) bezocht Australië
In mei dit jaar bezocht Ms Ghada Abu Ghalyoun van de Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) Australië, aldus een bericht van de Australian Unionists Supporting Palestine (AUSPalestine).
Ms Abu Ghalyoun is 'coordinator of the International Department and Youth Department of the PGFTU'; zij vertegenwoordigde de PGFTU veelvuldig in het buitenland.

Britse TUC steunt Palestina en herziet banden met organisaties die medeplichtig zijn aan de Israelische bezettingspolitiek

The Trades Union Congress, representing 6.5 million workers in the UK, voted overwhelmingly today (14 September 2011) to deplore the 'anti-democratic law' passed by the Israeli Knesset banning individuals and organisations in Israel from calling for the boycott of Israel, and reaffirmed existing policy to 'work closely with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign to actively encourage affiliates, employers and pension funds to disinvest from, and boycott the goods of, companies who profit from illegal settlements, the Occupation and the construction of the Wall'.
The new policy also 'calls on all unions on the basis of this policy to review their bi-lateral relations with all Israeli organisations, including Histadrut'. The motion was proposed by Unite the Union, and an amendment was proposed by the PCS.
Hugh Lanning, Chair of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Deputy General Secretary of the PCS Union which moved the amendment, said:
'Today British trade unions have decided not to buy into the Israeli occupation - not to buy goods from firms or work with organisations complicit with Israel's illegal occupation, settlements and wall.
'Israel must be made to honour international law. The UN, Obama and the EU should be making Palestine a reality not blocking their freedom.'
Hugh Lanning continued: 'Companies are paying the price for their complicity with Israel's crimes. Agrexco, infamous for exporting produce from Israel and the illegal settlements, has gone into liquidation. Veolia has lost contracts worth millions of pounds. It is time for companies and organisations to recognise that they must end their complicity with occupation and war crimes. The trade union movement was a central pillar of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. And today, trade unions in Britain are taking the same principled stance - supporting peace and justice, and opposing racism and apartheid.'
